So you want to know how to make perfect white rice in a rice cooker? As a Hispanic, white rice is a staple with our weekly meals. I wrote a post back in 2012 on how to make fluffy white rice and it is consistently one of my top posts. That post was on how to make white rice in a pot, but today’s post is on how to make white rice taste good in a rice cooker.
How to make perfect white rice
The rice cooker I use is a Black and Decker 6 cup rice cooker, but any brand and size would do for this recipe.

For ingredients you will need your preferred rice (I prefer Jasmine), water, vegetable or corn oil, salt, and garlic powder (or fresh garlic). Important note: If you choose a medium grain rice, use slightly less water (3/4 cups for every cup of rice).
My glass food container, which I use for rice was a gift. I found a link to a similar glass container on Amazon, too.
This recipe is fast and also a set it and forget it kind of side. Once you stir all the ingredients into the rice cooker, you just wait 15-20 minutes and serve. Though it is fast, I tend to cook enough for two nights so I can reheat the side another day of the week.
Tips for fixing sticky rice or under cooked rice
So what if your rice doesn’t come out fluffy like mine?
When we have sticky rice it means too much water or oil was used. This may happen if you use a shorter grain rice. That may be water or oil. If this happens to your rice, simply restart your rice cooker without the cover. Be careful not to stir it up too much. This makes your rice absorb more moisture and become too mushy.
Hard rice means there wasn’t enough moisture. Add a 1/4 cup of water, cover, and allow to heat another 5 minutes or until the rice is thoroughly cooked and soft.

I’m trying this out because my rice never comes out the way I like it. But my only question is: do you cover the rice cooker?
mine always boils over and out even though the lid has a venting hole.
It’s cooking now and I’m leaving the lid off so I’ll let you know how it comes out.
Yes – we definitely always cover. With cooking rice the steam created by the water as it evaporates is key to softening the grains. If your rice cooker is boiling over it is possible your just may be too small for the amount you’re making. We have a Black and Decker – simple and gets the job done. I would highly recommend this one, which comes with a measuring cup, spoon, and steamer basket.
So this rice is the best white rice ever Made. EVER!!
Thank you!
